Lemongrass and the Art of Decluttering

Lemongrass essential oil with its pungent, energetic, cleansing, invigorating scent is the oil of Cleansing. Doterra’s Lemongrass is grown in Southern India and steam distilled from the leaves of the plant. It has many other uses such as for repelling unwanted pests and providing a warming sensation when used for massage but since one of my favourite things is making space (Space Between??) for calm, feeling centered and clear - let’s talk lemongrass and the art of decluttering.

Piles, papers and pencils everywhere

If you desk looks anything like some of the amazing people I worked with at camp - perhaps your magic is in the chaos - YOU know where everything is, but no one else does and that’s okay! If this is you and not a problem, then this post isn’t for you. BUT if you are frustrated by the number of things you have on your desk to do, the piles of un-shredded mail, the broken pens, lost sandwiches and orange peels on your desk - read on!

The Sh*t Room

Yup. That one. The one where you throw everything when guests are coming by. The one that you will get to next weekend. The one where there are more things in there that you don’t know about than do. The room where all things go to live out their time buried in more stuff. The room where you need to climb over stuff to find stuff…I know…we had one too. It was the worst place in the house. I was never embarrassed about it - I usually introduced it to guests just so we didn’t loose them in there. The story of our sh*t-room is another blog post - but for now…if you have one, lemongrass is for you!

Heavy thoughts weighing on your heart

When you sit down for a moment and maybe even make yourself a tea, do you find yourself ready to get right back up again to do “one more thing”? Have you had a challenging co-worker and the conversations you’ve had (or wished you’d had) rolling around in your mind over and over again? When your mind is spinning (slow or fast) and you wish you could just stop ruminating and chewing through old experiences - lemongrass provides energetic support. As always, our bodies allow us to move feelings through them - lemongrass is an invitation to allow the release of our emotions (not to suppress).

Open the windows - let the air move through!

Fresh air is beautifully cleansing for our homes and hearts. One of my favourite things is a cool summer or fall breeze blowing through the house after a hot day - it feels like a bit of magic moving through and taking all the rougher edges of the day with it. If I want to further cleanse my home - even after a visit with a guest to cleanse the energy if required - I will put one drop of lemongrass in the diffuser for an hour or so and let the breeze and the oil work their magic together. Anytime you can add fresh air and lemongrass together do it!

How to use lemongrass while releasing

  • Diffuse 1-3 drops in your diffuser before you begin decluttering a space. Allow it to move through the room you will be working in before you get there. The act of adding essential oils with the intention of clearing out is really where the power lies.

  • Apply topically - dilute one drop of lemongrass in a carrier oils (fractionated coconut oil or almond oil etc.) and roll it on your wrists. One drop goes a LONG way. Start small. You may feel a warming sensation when you use it on your skin. A great idea is to apply the oil and follow up with a five to ten minute mindfulness or releasing meditation practice. “I make space for my desires. I release with gratitude what no longer serves the life I now say YES to!”

  • Add it to your cleaning spray - a few drops in your bottle and begin. The energy of the oil will inspire cleanliness and space.

  • Meditation - add a drop to the bottom of your feet as you meditate. The oil will support the release of what is weighing heavily and make space for what is to come.

Lemongrass Diffuser Blends

Lemongrass is a great addition to add some cleansing energy to your diffuser. Blend it with other oils to enjoy the benefits of the other oils also and to create a fresh scent in your home. Here are a few ideas below in these images.
